Who We Are

The FireBREAK Campaign is a collaborative, community-driven effort to reduce the risk of a severe wildfire in Moab. The campaign is made up of a coalition of local, state, and federal organizations, listed below.

Rim to Rim Restoration

Rim to Rim Restoration is a Moab-based nonprofit committed to nurturing healthy ecosystems and watersheds across southeastern Utah. Our small, dedicated staff accomplishes this by propagating native plants, regenerating damaged and altered landscapes, and convening stakeholders and communities.

By combatting invasive species and creating the conditions for revegetation, the Community Wildfire Defense Grant and the FireBREAK Campaign align with Rim to Rim’s commitment to fostering healthy landscapes in the Moab region.

Rim to Rim Restoration is the grant manager and administrator for the Community Wildfire Defense Grant. Rim to Rim staff manage fuels reduction projects, oversee budgets and grant reporting, convene partners and stakeholders, and helm public outreach.

Moab Valley Fire Department

Moab Valley Fire Department (MVFD) has provided fire protection and emergency response to the Moab Valley since 1957, and is a thriving professional, all-hazards response organization.  MVFD provides a variety of emergency and non-emergency services, including fire, dive team, hazardous materials, rescue, fire prevention services, and public education.

MVFD is dedicated to making our community a safer place by reducing hazardous fuels throughout the Moab Valley, and as such, plays a pivotal role in the FireBREAK Campaign and the Community Wildfire Defense Grant. The CWDG’s goals and geographic focus derive directly from MVFD’s 2020 Community Wildfire Protection Plan.

MVFD leads the CWDG and the FireBREAK Campaign on a day-to-day basis. The department works with partners to plan and execute fuels projects; plays an active role in community outreach; and directly combats hazardous fire fuels in the Moab Valley with its own fuels reduction team.

Grand County Weed Department

The Grand County Weed Department manages state- and county-declared noxious weeds throughout Moab, Spanish Valley, and greater Grand County. The department’s work is critical to the Community Wildfire Defense Grant because noxious weeds are non-native, invasive plants that also bring unique challenges to wildfire prevention and control.

Through the Community Wildfire Defense Grant, the Grand County Weeds Department has added a new position to the crew: the Fuels Reduction Coordinator. The goal of this position is to work in tandem with the other partners in fuels mitigation efforts. This involves participating in site visits, helping to create management plans, contributing to landowner outreach, and enacting these plans for weedy species.

This grant also allows the Weeds Department to expand their work to include the management of invasive plants that are a concern to the community because of the rate of spread, impacts on native vegetation, and wildfire risk. The Weeds Department is looking forward to continuing work with community members and home owners to manage weeds through education and collaboration.

Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands

The Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands (FFSL) is responsible for forest health, responding to wildland fires, and managing sovereign lands in Utah. FFSL is a participant in the Community Wildfire Defense Grant, administered by the USDA Forest Service in partnership with state forestry agencies. The Forest Service has allocated $5 billion over 5 years to help communities at risk of wildfires fund projects that support the three goals in the National Cohesive Wildland Fire Management Strategy: restoring and maintaining landscapes; creating fire-adapted communities; and improving wildfire response.

In addition to serving as a funding partner for the FireBREAK Campaign, FFSL assists with fire fuels removal and landowner outreach; participates in collaborative planning for Moab’s wildland-urban interface; and contributes in-kind labor, training, and equipment. By mitigating fire fuels and restoring riparian landscapes, the FireBREAK Campaign aligns with FFSL’s mission of managing healthy forests and reducing wildfire risk in Utah.

Grand County Sheriff’s Office of Emergency Management

The Grand County Sheriff’s Office of Emergency Management unites the emergency management community and coordinates the efforts necessary to mitigate, prepare for, respond to and recover from emergencies, disasters and catastrophic events.

GCSOEM partners with the FireBREAK Campaign to develop and implement wildfire- and flood-related outreach campaigns. In addition, the two partners are coordinating to reinvigorate Moab’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), which provides basic emergency response and preparedness training to community members. This work advances FireBREAK’s mission of increasing Moab’s resilience to wildfire and flood.

City of Moab

The City of Moab aims to enhance Moab’s vibrant community and improve its quality of life. In addition to many other responsibilities, the city owns and manages several properties and important infrastructure, including transit corridors and flood infrastructure, along Mill and Pack creeks.

The City of Moab is an important partner in the FireBREAK Campaign. The city contributes to fuels reduction projects by helping outline priority sites; facilitating operations; collaborating on public outreach; and conducting maintenance on city-owned property after fire fuels are removed. The City of Moab’s work to enhance community and improve quality of life aligns with FireBREAK’s goals of supporting a fire- and flood-resilient community.

Science Moab

Science Moab is a nonprofit that aims to make place-based science accessible to all. Through its programs — outreach, School to Science, and Science Certified — Science Moab strives to build a future in which communities across the Colorado Plateau can thrive from a deeper engagement with science and place-based knowledge.

Science Moab contributes to the Community Wildfire Defense Grant by facilitating educational events and creating a wildfire-science podcast series. By distilling and distributing regional research about wildfire, flooding, and ecology, Science Moab hopes to expand the Moab community’s understanding of these intertwined issues to build greater resiliency to natural disaster.

Moab Solutions

Moab Solutions is a small nonprofit that works with the homeless and others in need across the community, advocates for best practices recycling through hands on projects, removes littered trash and recycling from the trails, streams, highways and byways across this gorgeous region, and does regular trail maintenance and restoration work on public lands.

Moab Solutions has been walking Mill and Pack creeks for decades and they are honored to be part of an effort to prevent wildfires before they can start.

Utah Conservation Corps

The Utah Conservation Corps (UCC) is an AmeriCorps program made up of members, staff, and partners dedicated to service to our country, community and state’s public lands and local landscapes. The corps engages in projects throughout Utah that address goals relating to environmental conservation and professional development.

UCC crews provide important support to FireBREAK’s fuels mitigation projects. The FireBREAK Campaign frequently contracts with Moab’s UCC office to thin overgrown vegetation, prevent the spread of invasive species, and clear flammable debris from creek corridors.
